toddler child safetyIn these warm days of summer the family is starting to venture outdoors more. Trips to the beach and pools are what's in store but first and foremost, especially if you have a young child is toddler child safety around water. Every safety device is important here such as pool fencing and gates and of course parental supervision at all times. But even the most diligent parents can turn their backs for just a second and discover their child has fallen in the water. One safety measure you can use for that extra protection is a Safety Turtle Base Station. This is a device that will help protect your child and your pet in case they fall into the water. child safety door stopA Child safety door stop - Is it really necessary to buy such a thing? The answer would be yes, it is. In fact not just one door stop, but for all doors in your house whether they are sliding, glass or shutters should have a door stop guard on them.

Child Safety In The Home

child safety in the homeSadly, too often children have died in their own homes from simple mishaps that could have been avoided. Heavy furniture that can topple over when a child climbs on it is one hazard that can be fixed. Not only toppling over but on some furniture the hazards are also sharp corners and edges and the heavy items on top of the furniture itself.

Starting with child safety in the home you can prevent accidents by removing all glass from coffee tables and end tables. Pad sharp corners and edges with table edge cushions, install drawer latches on all dresser and hutch drawers so children cannot open them to climb on and install anti-tip furniture straps and brackets into studs in the walls. Remove all heavy and dangerous items from the top of furniture to keep it from falling on a child and latch all the doors to these cabinets as well.

Child Car Seat Safety Guidelines

child car seat safety guidelinesThere is nothing more important in the care of your child than protecting them while they ride in the car. Here are some child car seat safety guidelines that will provide you with the answers you need to keep them safe while you are on the road.

If you have an infant, you need to use a rear facing car seat at no more than a 45 degree angle, this is to the age of one or up to 20lbs. Use the right car seat for your child's weight and height. Always use the car seat safety belt latch and follow the instructions correctly when installing and when buckling up your baby.

If your child exceeds the car seats height and weight and if his shoulder's are above the car seats harness slots or his ears are above the car seat then you can take the next step to a bigger car seat and they can also face forward now, but be sure and place them in the back seat of the car. Again use the safety latch system correctly and make sure it fits snug and tight.

Many children outgrow the harness of a forward facing car seat at the age of 4 or 5 and can then move up to a booster seat.

Child Care Safety In An Old Home

child care safetyIf you are moving into an older home and have a baby, toddler or young child you need to know there are more child care safety features to worry about. Safety concerns are found in a home of any age but particularly one that is older.

Hazards such as lead based paint are a real issue, especially in homes that were built prior to 1978. Removal of the paint is something you might want to consider although it will be costly. Often, the paint in an old home will be covered over by a latex based paint that does make it less accessible to children. If the paint has not been covered over and is chipping or peeling you will need to do something about it.

Check all the railings inside and out to see if the spaces are wide enough for children to slip through. There are new regulations for the amount of space between each slat. Make sure all electrical outlets are grounded and have safety devices on them.

Many old homes do not have tempered glass, which is required now. Check all sliding glass doors, french doors, windows and shower enclosures. As with any home cabinets need to be secured, stariways need to have gates and access to pools and spas need to have protection around them.

Motorcycle Child Safety

motorcycle child safetyIf it were me, I would never put my child on a motorcycle but I know some people are motorcycle enthusiasts and wish to have their children on the back. So for them motorcycle child safety is a must with some other very important rules to follow.

If you wear a helmet it will be much more easy to convince your child to wear a helmet. We cannot stress enough the importance of helmets and in some states it is a law. If you have to hold on to your child with one hand while you try and steer with the other we would say that child is not old enough to ride. You need both hands to operate the bike and your child should be able to hold on to you with both hands.

The child should have long pants on as well as a long shirt or jacket to protect themselves somewhat in case of a fall. A rain jacket is also a good idea. And please make sure they are not carrying any kind of toy, bottled water or food with them. Make sure they are alert and not sleepy, a sleepy passenger cannot hold on properly. And finally, if your child cannot reach the foot pegs they are probably too little to ride the motorcycle.
