JLo Needs To Follow Child Safety In The Home

child safety in the homeJLo or Jennifer Lopez, as she likes to be called now, has a few lessons to learn for child safety in the home. As you all know by now, Jennifer and her husband Marc Anthony had twins last month and have spared no expense in giving them 1st class care. But is the lavish lifestyle she can afford them really the best care to give?

Staff at Parents magazine are up in arms over Jennifer Lopez's $100,000 dollar baby nursery, saying that it is a death trap for the babies. There are crib "suffocation hazards," such as pillows, stuffed animals and blankets. Other serious no-no's are the choking hazards of elaborately draped canopies over the cribs as well as the pretty-as-can-be bows tied to the crib slats and no window guard over the window.

Note to rich celebs: It is better to take care of your babies well than put on the dog for a magazine pictorial and try to impress everyone. Jeez, get a clue!

Child Safety Article Says Insults Do Hurt

child safety articleSticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me! How many times has this mantra been recited in schoolyards and on playgrounds all over the country? But do you believe it?

A child safety article says a new book by Jerome Neu, a humanities professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz has studied the impact of insults and slurs. Neu's book, Sticks and Stones: The Philosophy of Insults takes that classic old saying that is taught to most schoolchildren and examines it's truth.

His conclusions are that yes, insults do harm people and that hurtful words do have significant effects on children in particular. Insults and slurs define acceptable social behavior, character traits, free speech and laws. He cites examples from writings ranging from the philosopher Aristotle to the rapper Eminem.

Child Safety - Games You Should Be Aware Of

child safety gamesThere is a dangerous pastime that is turning deadly that parents need to be aware of for your childs safety. It is a 'game' that involves choking that children call the Choking Game.

Kids are looking for a way to get stress relief or a very short high without actually doing drugs or drinking. They think they are doing nothing wrong. Most of the players are boys but girls are doing it too in ages ranging from 9 -14 usually. And boys as well as girls are being found dead after trying it.

There are warning signs parents can look for such as suspicious marks on the neck that some kids may try to cover up with clothing. Watch for bloodshot eyes, headaches and the presence of belts and other ligatures in places such as their bedroom, either out in the open or hidden. Some children try to choke themselves with their hands while others have their friends do it for them using their hands.

It is very important that parents, educators and health care providers are aware of this phenomenon so they can look for the signs and talk to the children before it is too late.

Minnesotans Concerned For Toddler Child Safety

toddler child safetyIn Minnesota, a group of environmental and social service agencies are concerned about unhealthy chemicals, pesticides and other additives in products that affect consumers. Toddler child safety is at the top of their list and they are taking measures to fight back.

The Children's Safety Product bill would ban two chemicals in children's and baby products. They are Phthalates and Bisphenol-A that are in many baby toys made for children under 3 years old.

These chemicals are supposedly added to soften the vinyl in baby toys, including teething rings, toys and bibs. In addition, Bisphenol-A is used not only for toys but baby bottles and sippy cups for babies.

Studies have shown that these two chemicals are hormone disrupters and can interfere with the development of female and male sex hormones. Babies and toddlers are especially vulnerable because their brains and bodies are still developing.

Let's hope other states follow suit and pay attention to Minnesotans, they seem to know what they are doing.

Child Safety While Driving And Parking

child safety while drivingCharges were just dropped against a mother who had left her child in the car sleeping while she and her two other daughters walked just feet away and donated money to the Salvation Army. It was cold and snowy outside and the mother had locked the car with the alarm on. I happen to agree, in this case, that the charges should have been dropped. But other cases, I am not so sure of.

There have been many others in the news just this past year alone that are much more disturbing. Remember the mother that went to work all day at the school and forgot her child was in the backseat for 8 hours? And the same with the couple, who just happened to be doctors, that were too busy with their own schedules to remember that neither one had dropped the baby off at daycare? How about the one where the father went into a strip club for hours and left his child in the car for hours? Everyone of them horrible, yet as far as I know, not one of them were prosecuted for their crimes.

It happens all too often. Parents I guess you can never be told enough that child safety while driving and parking is extremely important. Never leave your child alone in the car!
